Hair Loss Awareness Month

It’s Not ‘Just’ Hair

In honor of National Hair Loss Awareness Month, we will host the hair loss awareness campaign,  It's Not Just Hair" throughout August.

Learn from hair loss experts, doctors, dermatologists and hair stylists to help educate individuals on the many conditions that cause hair loss and ways to manage it. Additionally, the campaign is designed to help others understand those who live with hair loss and the challenges they face. As the month progresses, we will update the website and our social media sites with the different causes of hair loss and ways to manage it.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most common cause of hair loss is hereditary thinning or balding, a condition that affects almost 80 million Americans.  Other common conditions that cause hair loss include cancer treatments, medicines and improper styling, but there are some uncommonly known causes that include hormonal imbalances and certain autoimmune diseases. The natural hair growth cycle also experiences hair loss during the telogen phase (resting phase).

Looking at Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune disease affects approximately 23 million people around the nation, according to the National Institutes of Health. It’s a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks normal healthy cells by mistake. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases that cause many different side effects. One side effect of at least six autoimmune diseases includes hair loss.

During the first week we will explore the auto-immune diseases that cause hair loss and why. Check our blog for updates.
